Everything listed on Etsy must be made or designed by the seller. There are an estimated 103 million Amazon Prime members in the United States—nothing comes close to its size and success in the e-commerce world. Like Etsy, the Amazon Handmade category is exclusively for artisans and designers, and merchants must go through an application process to qualify for Amazon's Handmade category. This encourages transparency and authenticity when it comes to the products sold in the category: everything must be genuinely handmade, recycled, or repurposed. The biggest draw for merchants looking at Amazon Handmade is that Amazon handles millions of site visits and customers from around the world every single day, and shoppers can easily add handmade products to their carts alongside their regular purchases. Merchants using the platform have access to Amazon's vast customer base. Additionally, Amazon listings are more likely to appear on Google Search.

Disadvantages of Amazon Handmade:

Unlike other Amazon categories, Handmade does not accept mass-produced products. Products manufactured in large quantities in a standardized manner are not welcome, and sellers cannot have a team of more than 20 people. Operations must be kept small and authentic, just like on Etsy. Because Amazon wants to ensure that products are genuinely handmade, merchants must also go through an application process. This process is reportedly slow, taking up to two weeks before sellers are vetted and ready to open their store. Payment methods are also worth commenting on. Amazon holds your payment until the products purchased from your store are shipped, and payments are only sent to merchants every two weeks.

Amazon Handmade Pricing and Fees

Amazon Handmade merchants must have a professional selling account, which costs €39 per month. However, this fee will be waived once you become an approved Amazon Handmade account after the first month. There are no listing or subscription fees, but there is a 15% per sale commission to consider.

Shipping and fulfillment
